Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic Massage at Bondi Junction, Sydney

At Ayurvedic Wellness Centre, we offer a range of authentic therapeutic massages. One of the questions we are often asked is, “what is the difference between a therapeutic massage, a remedial massage and a relaxation massage?”. Essentially, therapeutic massages combine elements of both relaxation and remedial massages. But what are the other differences between these three varieties of massage?

A relaxation massage’s primary goal is, as its name suggests, to relax the client. The treatment typically consists of rudimentary, though calming, massage techniques, and is usually favoured for those looking to treat themselves to a bit of down-time. Relaxation massages help to release endorphins, serotonin, cortisol and other hormones from the body, leading to that post-massage feeling of vibrance and rejuvenation. In addition, these massages help to relieve high stress levels and anxiety.

In contrast to a relaxation massage, a remedial massage is primarily focused on rehabilitating diagnosed injuries or illnesses. Remedial massage sessions typically begin with a consultation with your therapist, in which you explain the specifics of your health concern. The massage is then tailored to focus on helping to alleviate the pain and cause of your specific concern. Illnesses or injuries that are often treated or supplemented with remedial massage include muscle, tendon or ligament damage, blood circulation difficulties, wounds, back pain, migraines, carpal tunnel, whiplash, neck pain, sciatica, frozen shoulder, arthritis and various other conditions.

A therapeutic massage combines the benefits of relaxation massage with those of remedial massage. It is this type of massage that we offer at Ayurvedic Wellness Centre. Therapeutic massages are usually deeply relaxing, however, their end goal is greater than just leaving the client feeling refreshed. This kind of massage is often used to address injury or illness, while also relieving mental unrest and leaving the client feeling relaxed. Like remedial massages, therapeutic massages are customised for each individual client, and are performed by a qualified masseuse. Therapeutic massage is not exclusive to those suffering from pre-existing injury, however, and may be used as a means of maintaining holistic health and balance.

In a way, therapeutic massage is the best of both worlds- combining the relaxation of a relaxation massage with the health benefits of a remedial massage.
