Greeva Basti – Neck

1 hr, 30 mins
$395

Greeva Basti is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that pools warm medicated oil on the back of your neck. In Sanskrit, “greeva” means neck and “basti” refers to holding a medicated liquid in place. Practitioners use Greeva Basti to ease stiffness and support comfortable movement through your cervical spine.

Your therapist starts the Greeva Basti treatment with a relaxing Abhyanga full-body massage. Next, they shape a small ring of dough from black gram flour and water. You lie face down while the therapist seals the ring onto the back of your neck. Warm medicated oil fills the ring and stays for 30 to 45 minutes, with fresh warm oil added to keep the heat steady. The therapist then removes the oil and finishes with a gentle neck and upper-back massage.

How Greeva Basti can help you:
  • It may help relieve neck pain and stiffness at the back of the neck while supporting a wider range of movement.

I was suffering from acute back and shoulder pain and also had a stiff neck as I was unable to move my neck freely. I visited the Ayurvedic Wellness Centre, where my therapist gave me Abhyanga full-body Ayurvedic massage and Basti on my neck. I could feel the impact of the hot ayurvedic oil on my back and shoulders, as the pain I had been feeling for weeks had subsided within hours. I would recommend visiting the centre.

Dr. Taruna was brilliant. My neck was in a lot of pain. After few sessions was back to normal. Dr Taruna is knowledgeable and extremely diligent. Whilst also taking time to explain to me the cause of the pain and how to remediate it. Head down to Ayurvedic Wellness Centre, Bondi Junction, Sydney.

Highly recommended! One of the best massages I have ever been to. They targeted my knots and gave me some stretches to help manage the pain at home, during the doctors consultation with Dr.Taruna. So lucky to having an ayurvedic massage near me.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation first, or can I book it directly?

You can often book Greeva Basti directly for simple muscular tension. We recommend a consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor first if you have chronic muscle stiffness, numbness, headaches, or pain traveling into your arm.

Greeva Basti is a non-invasive therapy applied to the surface of your skin, with no needles or spinal manipulation. Your therapist tests the oil temperature on their hand before pouring, which helps prevent burns. Traditional guidelines advise against the treatment during a fever or if you have a skin condition on your neck.

Tell your practitioner about any allergies, pregnancy, recent surgery, or diagnosed spinal condition. If you notice numbness, arm weakness, or pain after an injury, see your GP before booking. Greeva Basti can complement medical care but does not replace a diagnosis.

Greeva Basti feels like a steady pool of warmth resting on the back of your neck. You lie on a padded table and remain still while the oil sits inside the dough ring.

Your therapist tops up the oil throughout to keep the warmth even. The session ends with a gentle massage over your neck.

Greeva Basti works alongside physiotherapy rather than replacing it. Physiotherapy builds strength and flexibility through targeted exercise and hands-on care. Greeva Basti adds soothing warmth that you may enjoy between those sessions.

Let your physiotherapist and your Ayurvedic practitioner know about each treatment so they can plan your care together.

You can, as long as your practitioner agrees it suits you. Poor posture, long hours at a computer, and daily stress strain your neck often before pain appears. Ayurveda values prevention, so some people choose Greeva Basti to care for that area early.

Wear loose clothing that you’re comfortable in getting a bit stained with oil. Before your visit, pack these items:

  • A list of your current medicines and supplements.
  • Any recent scan reports or GP letters about your neck.
  • An older top or scarf for the trip home, because a little oil may stay on your skin.

Your practitioner selects a medicated oil based on your symptoms and your Ayurvedic constitution. Oils that may be used include:

  • Ksheerabala Tailam (Bala, cow’s milk and sesame oil)
  • Sahachar Tailam (Sahachara cooked into a sesame oil)
  • Mee oil
  • Mahanarayana Tailam (sesame oil containing Ayurvedic 40 herbs)
  • Dhanwantharam Tailam (Sesame oil, cow’s milk and Bala)
  • Kottamchukkadi Tailam (sesame oil with ginger, garlic and other herbs)

Yes, but keep it light and allow time to settle. Traditional Ayurvedic protocols check that your previous meal has digested before treatment begins. You also lie face down for the session, so a heavy meal can feel uncomfortable.

You might notice warmth, relaxation, or easier movement after a single Greeva Basti session. Long-standing stiffness or degenerative concerns often require a short series, with the exact number depending on the cause, severity, and your body’s response.

You can book Greeva Basti in Sydney through our Fresha page or by calling us at +61 410 315 465. We’re open from 10AM to 7PM, 7 days a week.
