Hridaya Basti – Heart

1 hr, 30 mins
$395

Hridaya Basti is a centuries-old Ayurvedic ritual where a small pool of warm medicated oil rests on your chest, right above your heart. Ayurveda sees your heart as both a physical organ and the home of your emotions, so this treatment aims to nurture you on both levels. If you’ve been carrying stress in your chest, Hridaya Basti in Sydney offers a quiet window to slow down and breathe.

Your Hridaya Basti begins with a relaxing Abhyanga full-body massage. Next, your therapist will ask you to lie comfortably on your back, then shape a ring of soft dough made from black gram flour, and seal it over your chest area. They then pour warm medicated oil slowly into the ring and keep it at a soothing temperature for about 30 to 45 minutes. Afterward, your therapist removes the oil, gently massages the area, and invites you to rest with a cup of warm herbal tea in our meditation room.

How Hridaya Basti can help you:
  • Many clients turn to Hridaya Basti to ease stress, emotional heaviness, and chest tension. The steady warmth may help muscles relax and encourage a calmer state of mind.
  • Ayurvedic practitioners traditionally use it to support people dealing with anxiety, grief, restlessness, or poor sleep linked to tension.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation first, or can I book it directly?

You can book Hridaya Basti directly if you’re generally healthy and want to relax. A consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor is wiser if you have a heart, respiratory or significant medical condition.

And if a cardiologist or GP manages your care, check with them before your first session.

Hridaya Basti is generally well tolerated when performed by a trained therapist. The main risks are skin irritation, a reaction to the oil or discomfort if the oil is too hot. Your therapist checks the temperature with you throughout, so speak up as soon as anything feels uncomfortable.

Hridaya Basti doesn’t replace cardiology care, prescribed medication or emergency treatment. If you ever feel chest pain, pressure or breathlessness, call Triple Zero (000) straight away.

Yes, share your full health history before your Hridaya Basti begins. Mention any heart or lung conditions and recent surgery. Let your therapist know about skin sensitivities, allergies, and all medications you take, including supplements.

Many Ayurvedic oils use a sesame base, so a sesame allergy matters. Tell your therapist if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a fever. These details help them adjust the oil or advise you to wait.

Most people describe Hridaya Basti as a warm, heavy hug resting on the chest. The oil feels comforting, not hot, and the gentle weight often invites slower, deeper breathing. Some clients drift into a light doze while others notice emotions rising to the surface. Both reactions are completely normal.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting a little oily. Your therapist keeps you covered with towels, leaving only your chest exposed.

Skip body lotion the day of your Hridaya Basti session so the dough ring seals properly. Bring a list of your medications.

Your practitioner chooses the oil for your Hridaya Basti based on your dosha (your unique mind-body constitution in Ayurveda) and your concerns. Ksheerabala Taila is a popular choice, made by cooking the Bala herb (Sida cordifolia) with cow’s milk and sesame oil.

Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), a tree bark with a long history in Ayurvedic heart care, may also be used.

Yes, but keep it light and finish eating about one to two hours before your session. Lying on your back with warm oil on your chest is more comfortable when your stomach isn’t full.

Arriving very hungry can leave you lightheaded, so a small snack like fruit works well.

Many people feel calmer and lighter right after their first Hridaya Basti, though everyone responds differently. Longer-term changes vary by person and depend on your health, lifestyle, and goals.

For ongoing emotional or physical issues, our Ayurvedic doctor may recommend a short series or pair Hridaya Basti with Abhyanga and other supportive care.

Book your Hridaya Basti in Sydney by calling us at +61 410 315 465 or booking through our Fresha page. Our clinic is in Bondi Junction, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, and is open from 10AM to 7PM.

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your appointment to complete a short health form and settle in. A few quiet minutes help your body shift into rest before the warm oil touches your chest.
