Champi – Indian Head Massage

30 mins
$140

A traditional Indian head massage eases tension in your scalp, neck, and shoulders. In India, it is called Champi, the word that later gave English the word “shampoo”.

Your therapist begins by asking about your health and any tight areas. You usually stay clothed and seated while they work through your upper back, shoulders, and neck with kneading and gentle pressure. We use warm herbal oil on your scalp with rhythmic strokes and light pressure on Marma points (key energy areas). The treatment ends with slow, soothing strokes across your forehead and temples.

How Champi massage can help you:
  • An Ayurvedic head massage may reduce cortisol, a hormone released when you feel stressed. It is also widely used alongside regular care for sleep problems, neck or shoulder pain, fatigue, tight shoulders, scalp dryness and tension around the head and jaw.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Champi different from western-style head massages?

Indian head massage comes from Ayurveda and treats your head, mind, and energy as one connected whole. Western-style head massages, like a salon scalp rub or part of a Swedish massage, mainly focus on relaxing muscles.

Champi also works on Marma points and often uses herbal oils chosen to suit your dosha, which is your unique mind-body type in Ayurveda.

Yes. The Ayurvedic Wellness Centre has offered authentic Ayurvedic care in Sydney since 2011, and our team is composed of trained, credentialed Ayurvedic therapists. You are always welcome to ask about your therapist’s training when you book.

Avoid it if you feel unwell or have a fever. You should also wait if your scalp has an infection, an open wound or a cold sore.

Some health conditions require a conversation with your doctor before booking. Speak with your GP first if any of these apply to you:

  • A recent head or neck injury, or recent surgery.
  • Blood clots, a bleeding disorder or a tendency to bruise easily.
  • Osteoporosis or nerve damage.
  • Current cancer treatment.
  • Pregnancy, so your doctor or midwife can confirm massage is right for you.

Please tell your therapist about any medicines or health conditions too. They can adjust the pressure or avoid an area.

Gentle head massage has long been part of family life in India, where oiling and rubbing a child’s scalp is a common part of growing up.

If you would like to book a session for your child or teenager, please contact our team first. We can talk through their health and the right pressure for them, along with how you can stay involved.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing that lets your therapist reach your neck and shoulders easily.

Herbal oil can stain fabric, so you may prefer to skip your favourite outfit. Remove earrings and necklaces before your session and bring a hair tie if you have long hair.

You can wash your hair in our centre after your Champi massage session.

However, we recommend not washing your hair for at least one to two hours so the oil can continue nourishing your scalp and hair.

Yes, you can usually return to work straight after an Champi massage. You may feel deeply relaxed or a little drowsy at first, so take a few minutes before driving.

There is no fixed schedule. The right rhythm depends on your needs and how you feel after each session. Some people book every week or two during stressful periods, then settle into a monthly visit.

Your therapist can suggest a plan that suits your lifestyle and budget. They may also share simple Ayurvedic head massage strokes you can try at home between visits.

You can book through our Fresha page or by calling us at +61 410 315 465. Choose a time that suits you and share any health concerns to help your therapist prepare.

If you have questions before booking your Champi massage in Sydney, our team is happy to help.

Arriving 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment gives you time to settle in without rushing.

On your first visit, your therapist will chat with you about past and present health concerns and the medications you use. Arriving early leaves room for that conversation, so your full session time is spent on your care.
