Janu Basti – Knees

1 hr, 30 mins
$395

Janu Basti is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that pools warm herbal oil over your knee and holds it there to let the warmth settle into the joint. If knee stiffness has started to change how you walk or climb stairs, Janu Basti in Sydney offers a gentle way to care for that joint.

Your session starts with a pleasant Abhyanga full-body massage. Next, your therapist will ask you to lie on your back and then shape a ring of black gram (urad dal) dough around your knee and seal it against your skin. The therapist fills this well with warmed herbal oil and adds more as it cools, usually for about 30 minutes. Once the retention stage ends, your therapist gently massages your knees and the surrounding muscles, supporting your mobility and comfort.

How Janu Basti can help you:
  • It is often chosen for chronic knee stiffness, reduced mobility, age-related joint discomfort, overuse, recovery after a sports injury and general care of the knee area. Think of it as supportive care rather than a cure.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation first, or can I book it directly?

You can book Janu Basti treatment directly if you’re generally healthy. We recommend an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation if you have a diagnosed knee condition. Your practitioner uses that time to choose the right oil and check your health history.

It is generally considered a gentle, low-risk therapy because the oil stays on the outside of your body. The main risks are skin reactions to the oil or dough and discomfort if the oil is too warm, which your therapist checks before pouring.

Practitioners usually postpone treatment if your knee is hot and acutely swollen or if you have an open wound or fever. Mention any allergies and conditions such as diabetes that can dull skin sensation. And if you are pregnant, check with your GP first.

Yes, in many cases, but timing matters. Janu Basti usually suits the recovery phase after initial swelling and heat have settled.

If you suspect a fracture or ligament tear, see your GP or a sports physician first. After knee surgery, wait until your wound has healed and your surgeon is comfortable with complementary therapies.

The treatment works alongside physiotherapy and does not replace it. Exercise and strength work remain the foundation of knee care in Australia, guided by your physiotherapist.

Many people find the warmth after a session makes their exercises more comfortable. Let both practitioners know about each other so your care stays coordinated.

The oil can stain fabric, so wear older, darker clothes. Bring a list of your current medicines and any recent scans or specialist letters about your knee.

Your practitioner picks the oil to match how your knee feels and your overall constitution. These classical Ayurvedic oils are the most common:

  • Ksheerabala oil: Made with the herb bala (Sida cordifolia), milk and sesame oil. Practitioners favour it for knees that feel fragile or tire easily.
  • Dhanwantaram oil: A multi-herb blend many practitioners prefer when your knee feels locked up and slow to bend.
  • Mahanarayana oil: A long-established choice for everyday joint aches.

The dough ring itself is simply black gram flour and water.

Treat your knee gently for the rest of the day and keep it warm. Follow these habits to support your session:

  • Keep your knee wrapped up and away from fans or air conditioning.
  • Let your shower run warm over your knee rather than cold.
  • Give your knee a lighter day, with fewer stairs and nothing heavy to carry.
  • Pick warm, simple meals that sit lightly in your stomach.
  • Head to bed at a reasonable hour so your body can rest.

Some people feel their knee loosen within the first few sessions, while others notice gradual change over a full course. Most courses span about 7 to 14 visits, booked at regular intervals.

Everyone responds differently, so your practitioner will suggest a plan after assessing your knee. Once you have that plan, booking is simple.

You can book the treatment by calling us at +61 410 315 465 or through our Fresha page. When you book, mention any knee injury or recent surgery so the team can prepare.

Plan to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment. That gives you time to complete any health forms and change without rushing.

A calm start helps you keep your leg still while the oil sits in the ring. Your knees carry you every day, and Janu Basti in Sydney is one gentle way to care for them in return.
