Crohn’s Disease

Treatment for Chron’s Disease

Crohn’s Disease is a chronic inflammatory condition impacting the intestines. While similar to Ulcerative Colitis in that it primarily causes ulcerations of the small and large intestines, it differs due to the wider scope of the digestive system it can impact. With Crohn’s Disease, any part of the digestive system, from the mouth to the anus, can be affected.

This chronic and often very uncomfortable and distressing condition causes a wide variety of symptoms including:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Blood in the stool
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Skin inflammation
  • Arthritis

It is thought that Crohn’s is caused by interactions between environmental, immunological and bacterial factors in genetically susceptible individuals. In these people, the immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract, potentially to try and stop pathogens, many of which are harmless, from entering. This process causes the proliferation of white blood cells, which leads to chronic inflammation.

In Ayurvedic tradition, Crohn’s Disease is thought to be caused by a weakened and imbalanced digestive system that has become susceptible to a build up of toxins and the triggering of a severe immune response. Poor diet, inflammatory foods, stress and the depression of the bodies’ natural ability to heal are all thought to contribute to the proliferation of toxins and the eventual imbalance.
