Ulcerative Colitis is a disease characterised by chronic inflammation in the large intestine, leading to micro-ulcers and infection. The primary cause of the condition is unknown but recent research suggests that it is triggered by the immune system reacting to an environmental, dietary or infectious agent in those who are already genetically predisposed to the condition. It is not caused by stress or food sensitivities but these things CAN trigger symptoms or worsening of the condition in some people. Similar to but different from both Crohn’s Disease and IBS, Ulcerative Colitis usually manifests with the following symptoms:
- Bloody bowel movements
- Chronic diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
Some sufferers may also experience ‘flu like’ symptoms and a general feeling of being uncomfortable and unwell.
In Ayurvedic tradition, Ulcerative Colitis is thought to be caused by an imbalance within the body due to a toxic build up which then activates a severe immune response. Poor diet, inflammatory foods, stress and the depression of the bodies’ natural ability to heal are all thought to contribute to the proliferation of toxins and the eventual imbalance.
The western approach to treating Colitis is with prescribed medication. The Ayurvedic approach differs in that it seeks to determine the exact imbalances in the body and why they are occurring, then treats those, as opposed to the just the symptoms.
