Treating Ulcerative colitis -Ayurveda Way

“Treat Ulcerative Colitis- The Ayurvedic Way”

Have you ever experienced persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, and blood in stool? If so, you may be suffering from ulcerative colitis.

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the large intestine in which the lining of the large intestine becomes inflamed and develops tiny ulcerations. The ulceration is caused by uncontrolled inflammation underneath the layer of the colon. The ulcers become painful and bleed profusely after every effort to pass stool, which is a common ulcerative colitis symptom.

According to Ayurveda, ulcerative colitis is a disease of the pitta dosha and vata dosha. Ayurveda says that if we digest well or if our digestion is optimal, we maintain good health.  Our digestive system also referred to as ‘agni’ has several functions, mainly digestion, absorption of nutrients and assimilation of food particles. A weak agni or imbalanced agni causes improper or inadequate digestion of food particles and often leads to accumulation of ama or toxins which is absorbed and stored in the body. The stored ama affects the secretion of various digestive juices and leads to impaired digestive metabolism. Therefore, one of the main causes of ulcerative colitis is impaired agni. Other causes include stress, excessive intake of oily, fatty and spicy food and excessive alcohol consumption.

Ayurveda is a holistic approach to medicine that originated more than 5,000 years ago and the concept behind the practice is that disease comes from an imbalance in a person’s consciousness. Ayurveda focuses on treating the root of the disease and not merely the symptoms. Ayurvedic treatment for ulcerative colitis focuses on healing the ulcers, restoring normal function of the colon, and maintaining the overall health of the digestive system.

Coping with ulcerative colitis: Tips and tricks

  • Ama detoxification- Panchakarma detox is a very important part of ulcerative colitis treatment as it cleans the body inside out. At its root, an ayurvedic cleanse improves the strength of agni (metabolic fire) in the GI tract and throughout the body by resting and purifying the digestive system. It helps eliminate toxins from different areas of the body
  • Diet- Avoid pitta aggravating foods like oily, fried, spicy and acidic food. Consult with our ayurvedic practitioner to see which dosha is aggravated and an ayurvedic dosha balancing diet helps pacify the vitiated dosha thus becoming a prominent part of ulcerative colitis treatment
  • Ulcerative colitis diet includes eating small meals throughout the day which are easy to digest
  • Drink plenty of water to maintain the equilibrium of essential nutrients
  • Practice yoga to improve blood circulation and maintain proper functioning of secretions.
  • Meditation and mindfulness practices helps calm the mind and lowers inflammation.
  • Consult with our highly experienced ayurvedic practitioners to get a diet plan to suit your body type and achieve balance in your body.
