Gastritis

Gastritis refers to inflammation of the stomach lining and can occur as both an acute, short-term or chronic, longer-term condition. Modern lifestyle factors including alcohol and anti-inflammatory medication along with some allergic conditions and infection are usually to blame for the condition. Research has found that some forms of chronic atrophic gastritis can increase the risk of developing stomach cancer, making effective treatment even more important. Even when non-cancer forming, gastritis needs to be managed to ensure optimum health and well-being.

Gastritis is often non-symptomatic but occasionally can cause issues including:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdomen pain
  • Nausea and/or indigestion
  • Blood in stools or blood in vomit
  • Weight loss

Many cases of gastritis are also attributed to the Helicobacter Pylori bacterium, a pathogen that finds its way into the lining of the stomach and produces irritation and inflammation causing chemicals. Helicobacter Pylori is also responsible for conditions like peptic Ulcers, indigestion and can contribute to the development of stomach cancer.

Ayurvedic tradition looks at infection as a signifier of issues within the body itself as opposed to looking just at the impact of a virus or bacterial condition. In the case of gastritis, it is thought that an imbalanced, toxic gut it to blame due to the conditions it provides for the proliferation of the Helicobacter Pylori bacteria and subsequent blockage of proper circulation.
