Premenstrual Syndrome, commonly known as PMS, refers to the symptoms women exhibit in the days prior to menstruation. Studies show that roughly 25% of women experience severe PMS, whilst at least 75% experience symptoms of some kind. The condition has the ability to interfere with lifestyle patterns and cause stress. Ayurveda states that the cause of PMS is hormonal imbalance. Studies suggest that genetics and having a stressful lifestyle may also be factors. In this article, we will discuss the signs and symptoms of PMS and detail the role of Ayurveda in managing it.

What can Ayurveda do?
Ayurveda takes an holistic approach to treating medical conditions, and PMS is no exception. According to Ayurveda, PMS is linked with dosha imbalances, usually of the Pitta or Vata dosha. Consultants believe that some symptoms of the condition, such as anxiety, depression and pain are linked with the Vata dosha, whilst others, including acne, anger and frustration, correspond with Pitta. Therefore, it is important to guard against aggravating either of these doshas. In order to balance Vata, try to avoid overexercising and consuming too many dry, bitter, pungent or astringent foods. For Pitta, you may like to limit your exposure to the sun, avoid consuming alcohol and avoid skipping meals.Beyond these simple measures, Ayurveda offers a range of massage treatments which may be beneficial in relieving the symptoms of PMS.
