Ayurveda and Fatigue

While the term “fatigue” is a broad one, most current medical practitioners, whether Ayurvedic or otherwise, understand fatigue to be a state of constant weakness or tiredness.  Fatigue may be mental or physical, and is more common in Australian society than most of us realise.  In fact, each year, more than 1.5 million Australians seek medical advice about managing this condition.  In and of itself, fatigue is not a disease, but rather a symptom of poor lifestyle choices, stress or other medical illnesses.  In this article, we will examine Ayurveda’s approach to dealing with fatigue, and suggest some measures you can take to manage it.

Ayurveda’s understanding of fatigue

In Ayurveda, fatigue is referred to as Klama.  It is thought that fatigue arises as a result of an imbalance of the Kapha dosha, and as such, those of the Kapha body type are most at risk of developing it.  Other than work-related dissatisfaction and stress, Ayurveda believes that a poorly balanced diet may lead to suffering from this condition.  Consuming too narrow a range of food types or a large amount of processed foods may lead to the stasis of food in the intestine, stomach or other bodily chambers.  This stasis of food may obstruct bodily channels and lead to fatigue.

Symptoms of this condition may include:

What can Ayurveda do?

As discussed above, stress and poor dietary choices are two of the primary causes of fatigue.  The most efficient method of treatment is therefore our Panchakarma detox program, which targets the root of these two problems and revitalises the body.  As this condition is often caused by toxins in the body, it is important to rid the body of those toxins using our detox program before further treatment can progress.

Maintaining a balanced diet is essential in guarding against this condition.  This is especially true for those with the Kapha body type.  Avoiding processed, stale and cold foods is a good place to start.  In addition, you may like to consider including warm beverages, vegetables and sour foods in your diet, as these have a revitalising effect on the body.

You may also like to treat your fatigue by way of our massage treatments.  These massages not only relax the body and mind, but they also promote healthy bodily functions.  For these reasons, we suggest our Udvartana massage and Deep Relaxation Package treatments.  If you would like to know more about fatigue’s effect on your specific body type, you may like to book an appointment with one of our Ayurvedic consultants.  As Ayurveda is customised to each individual’s nuanced body type, booking a consultation will help you to understand the most efficient ways to treat fatigue with respect to your specific needs.
