Adrenal Gland Exhaustion

The adrenal glands are located above the kidneys and are responsible for the production of a variety of natural steroids and hormones, all of which are vital in maintaining a balanced body and mind.  The adrenal glands also play an important role in regulating stress levels in the body.  However, as our lifestyle is more hectic than ever, so too is it more difficult for the adrenal glands to regulate the impact of external forces on our internal systems.  It is important, then, to monitor the levels of exertion under which the adrenal glands are placed, so as to avoid pushing the body into a state of stress and hormonal imbalance.  In this article, we will examine the signs and symptoms of adrenal gland exhaustion and discuss the steps you can take to make sure your adrenal glands are uninhibited in their functioning.

Signs and symptoms

Adrenal gland exhaustion is often an emotionally and physically taxing condition.  It has numerous signs and symptoms, which may vary from person to person.  Some signs and symptoms of the condition may include:

  • Pain, especially in back
  • Stiffness in joints
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Exhaustion
  • Lack of confidence
  • Dryness
  • Sunken eyes and cheeks
  • Weakness
  • Poor memory or confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased libido
  • Low blood sugar
  • Poor immune system

Dietary and Lifestyle measures

Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to help your body’s adrenal glands to function effectively.  Firstly, try limiting your sugar, alcohol and caffeine consumption, and instead integrate more plant-based foods into your diet.  Regular intake of ghee may also help to relieve pressure on the adrenal glands.

Similarly, there are simple lifestyle alterations you could consider making.  Taking regular baths helps to relieve the excess stress associated with dysfunctional adrenal glands.  Further, disrupted sleep patterns may lead to internal imbalance, which could have negative impacts on the adrenal glands, so aim to have at least eight hours of sleep per night.  Emotional stress and trauma may also effect adrenal functions so try to limit these stressors where possible.

In addition, Ayurveda has documented the benefits of holistic massage in balancing adrenal functions.  We recommend our best-selling Deep Relaxation Package for the ultimate experience in relieving the stress associated with adrenal gland disruption.  This massage package also helps to balance the body’s internal functions.  You may also consider booking in for a consultation with one of our in-house doctors, who can advise you further of the best treatments for your specific body type and needs.
