Skin problems, including atopic dermatitis (eczema) and Urticaria (hives) are generally considered to be treatable inflammatory conditions. Eczema is often inherited and requires long-term management while Urticaria is generally short lived and caused by a release of histamine into the skin.
Eczema is caused by the inability to repair damage to the skin barrier. This is due to a mutation in the filaggrin gene. Filaggrin helps form and strengthen the skin barrier. In non-sufferers, every cell in the skin will have two copies of the gene. Those that suffer eczema will only have one copy. Eczema can be triggered by a number of environmental or allergic factors and symptoms include:
- Skin dryness
- Red, scaly areas of skin
- Watery or weepy fluid from affected skin
Urticaria or hives is quite common and characterised by raised, red spots on the skin and/or itching. These generally occur after contact with something that has triggered the body’s histamine response. Occasionally, an acute or chronic case of hives may occur which will come and go for a number of days, weeks or even years. Common triggers include:
- Food additives
- Contact with plants or animals
- Extremes of temperature
- Bee and wasp stings
The general treatment for eczema and hives is a combination of over the counter and prescribed medications and creams, depending on the severity of the condition.
