Udvartana Massage and Scrub

Udvartana massage is a traditional Ayurvedic body treatment using warm herbal powder instead of oil. Classical texts like the Charaka Samhita describe two forms: Ruksha Udvartana with dry powder and Snigdha Udvartana with powder blended into oil. Your Ayurvedic practitioner chooses the form that best suits your body and skin.

Your Udvartana treatment starts by preparing your body with a head, neck and shoulder massage followed by a light warm-oil massage. Your therapist then applies a customised herbal powder or paste over your body using brisk upward strokes. This technique exfoliates your skin and builds warmth and stimulation, making Udvartana more energising than a relaxation massage. Afterward, you take a warm shower at the centre, then rest with herbal tea in our meditation room.

How Udvartana massage can help you:
  • Clients often choose Udvartana massage to relieve sluggishness, low energy, dull or rough skin, fluid retention, heaviness in the body and to support lymphatic drainage.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Udvartana massage different from a regular body scrub?

Udvartana massage is a therapeutic Ayurvedic treatment, while a regular body scrub is mainly cosmetic. A standard scrub polishes skin with sugar or salt. Udvartana massage uses medicated herbal powder and deeper upward strokes chosen to suit your constitution.

Your Ayurvedic practitioner selects herbs and pressure based on your body’s needs, not just your skin’s appearance.

No, you don’t need to know your dosha before booking. Your Ayurvedic practitioner assesses your prakriti, your natural constitution, during a brief consultation before the session.

This check helps because dry herbal powder suits some people better than others. Udvartana massage traditionally suits Kapha types best, while those with dominant Vata dosha and dry skin may prefer a gentler oil-based version.

Udvartana massage is generally well tolerated but isn’t suitable for everyone. Ayurvedic guidelines advise against it during pregnancy and on broken skin, open wounds, or very dry skin.

You should also wait if you have a fever, active skin infection, or a flare of eczema or psoriasis. Let your practitioner know about any herbal allergies, medications, or recent surgery. If you have a chronic health condition, check with your GP first to keep your care coordinated.

Triphala is one of the most widely used blends in Udvartana massage. It combines three dried fruits in equal parts: Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amalaki.

Other classical formulas include Kolakulathadi churna, which may contain jujube fruit, horse gram, Himalayan cedar, black gram, flaxseed and barley. Your practitioner chooses the blend based on your constitution and skin.

The scrubbing shouldn’t hurt but feels firmer and more invigorating than a relaxation massage. Your therapist adjusts pressure to your comfort and avoids tender areas.

Some people notice mild warmth or temporary redness afterward. In sensitive or dry skin, vigorous rubbing can cause small abrasions, so your practitioner may switch to an oil-based paste to reduce friction.

If you have sensitive, inflamed, broken or recently treated skin, talk to us before booking so we can check if it suits you.

Yes, but keep it light and finish eating at least one to two hours before your appointment. Traditional Ayurvedic protocols ensure your last meal has digested before treatment.

A heavy meal before Udvartana massage can make you uncomfortable when changing positions on the table. Sip water beforehand, then choose something warm and gentle on your stomach afterward.

Wear loose, comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting powdery. During treatment, you’ll undress to your comfort level. Remove jewellery and tie long hair back before starting. Darker clothing helps on the trip home since herbal powder can linger.

You’ll likely feel slightly powdery after an Udvartana massage, which is normal. Your therapist usually wipes away most herbal powder with warm towels before you dress. You can take a warm shower in our centre after your session.

Yes, many people pair Udvartana with Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Champi Indian massage or Kizhi, and it appears in several of our packages. Which combination suits you best depends on your skin, energy and what you want your treatment to achieve.

Your practitioner can recommend the best order and length for a combined session. Many who choose Udvartana in Sydney book these therapies together to save time.
