Pizhichil Treatment – Restore & Rebalance

1 hr
$315

Pizhichil is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy where therapists bathe you in a steady flow of warm herbal oil while gently massaging you. It is an oleation and sudation therapy, meaning it oils your body and encourages gentle sweating.

The Pizhichil session begins with a head, neck, and shoulder massage before the full-body oil treatment. In our practice, our trained therapists handle the treatment fully on their own, alternating smoothly between pouring the oil and massaging you. The oil is poured and massaged with synchronised strokes as you move through seven positions. After the Pizhichil treatment, you can relax and have herbal tea in our meditation room.

How Pizhichil can help you:
  • Pizhichil is often chosen for profound relaxation, relief from deep muscular tension, fatigue, dry skin, stiffness and sleep disturbances.
  • Treat Pizhichil as a complementary therapy alongside care from your GP, never as a replacement.

From the moment you step in the door you feel relaxed. I had a head and shoulder massage, a foot massage, followed by a body massage. All done with warm massage oils and took about an hour and a half, followed by a soothing cup of herbal tea in the relaxation room.

Highly recommend this place if you want to escape from the outside world for a few hours, and experience an amazing massage at the same time.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Pizhichil different from Shirodhara?

Pizhichil covers your whole body in warm oil, while Shirodhara focuses a thin stream of liquid on your forehead. The name Shirodhara translates to a “stream on the head.” Depending on your needs, practitioners may choose herbal oil, buttermilk or tender coconut water for it.

The goals differ too. Shirodhara is mainly offered for mental calm and better sleep, whereas Pizhichil also works on your muscles and joints.

No, they are related but different. Abhyanga is a full-body massage where your therapist applies warm herbal oil by hand, while Pizhichil adds a continuous stream of warm oil throughout the massage.

That steady flow means Pizhichil uses much more oil, often three to four litres in a single session. Because the warm oil creates gentle heat and sweating, Ayurveda counts Pizhichil as both an oil and heat therapy. Abhyanga suits regular self-care, while Pizhichil is more intensive and usually part of a prescribed plan.

Not necessarily if you are booking purely for relaxation and are otherwise in good health. We recommend an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation if you have a diagnosed condition, chronic pain, neurological symptoms, take regular medication or are unsure if the treatment is right for you. Keep your GP informed so both practitioners understand your full picture.

No, Pizhichil is not suitable for everyone. Traditional Ayurvedic protocols advise against it during pregnancy and while you have a fever.

Practitioners may postpone your session if you have an active infection, broken skin, or a skin condition that oil could aggravate. Tell your practitioner about any heart condition or blood pressure concerns before you begin. Mention diabetes too, since nerve changes can affect how you sense heat.

Eat your meal at least two hours before your treatment. Use the bathroom beforehand, since you stay on the table throughout.

Wear old, comfortable clothes for the trip home because oil will stain the fabric. Leave jewellery at home and tie back long hair.

You undress only as far as you feel comfortable, and careful draping covers you throughout the treatment. You can keep your underwear on, and your therapist uncovers only the area they are treating.

Your practitioner chooses the oil based on your dosha and the concern you want support with. Classical formulations such as Dhanwantharam thailam, Ksheerabala thailam and Pinda thailam are some of the oils that can be used.

Most of these oils start with a sesame oil base infused with herbs. Ksheerabala thailam, for example, combines sesame oil with milk and the herb bala (Sida cordifolia). If you react to sesame or any herb, tell your practitioner before your oil is prepared.

Ideally, no. We advise resting for a few hours and avoiding exertion, cold drafts, and swimming for the rest of the day.

Many people feel relaxed or drowsy afterward. If you can, book your Pizhichil in Sydney for a late afternoon or a day off when you can go home and rest.

We suggest resting about an hour or two before taking a warm shower. Use warm water, not cold, with a mild cleanser or any herbal powder your practitioner gives you to remove excess oil.

Your practitioner may adjust this timing, so follow the advice they give you.
