Nabhi Basti – Stomach

1 hr, 30 mins
$395

Nabhi Basti is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that pools warm herbal oil over your navel inside a small ring of soft dough. The name comes from Sanskrit: “nabhi” means navel and “basti” means holding or retaining liquid. Ayurveda has long viewed the navel as the centre of digestion and vitality, so this gentle ritual aims to bring warmth and calm to your core.

Your Nabhi Basti session begins with Abhyanga, a warm full-body oil massage that helps you settle. Lying on your back, your therapist shapes a ring of black gram flour dough around your navel. They then pour warm medicated oil slowly into the ring and top it up to keep the temperature comfortable. Your treatment ends with a gentle abdominal massage, followed by time to rest with herbal tea in our meditation room.

How Nabhi Basti can help you:
  • In Ayurveda, Nabhi Basti is traditionally used to support Vata balance and digestive comfort.
  • Many clients book it for occasional bloating, gas, sluggish digestion, or period cramps. Others enjoy it simply to unwind.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation first before booking a Nabhi Basti treatment?

A consultation with an  Ayurvedic doctor is the best place to start, especially if you have ongoing digestive concerns or a medical condition. Dr Deepika Kaushal or Dr Taruna Yadav will review your dosha and health history, then choose the oil and number of sessions that suit you.

If you want a relaxing session, our team can tell you whether you can book Nabhi Basti directly. If you have persistent abdominal pain, please see your GP first, since Ayurveda works alongside medical care rather than replacing it.

Ayurveda sees the navel as a vital Marma point and the seat of agni, your digestive fire. Classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita describe the navel region as a meeting point for the body’s channels.

Modern anatomy tells a different story. The adult navel has no open channel to your organs, so the oil works on your skin rather than traveling inside. The skin around your navel shares nerve pathways with parts of your gut, which may explain why warmth and touch here feel soothing.

The difference lies in how the oil or herbs meet your navel. Nabhi Pooran fills the hollow of your belly button with warm oil or ghee. Nabhi Lepa applies a thick herbal paste over the navel area rather than oil.

Nabhi Basti uses a dough ring to hold a larger pool of warm oil over a wider area. That is why a trained therapist performs it in a clinic.

Nabhi Basti is generally gentle, but not suitable for everyone. Please wait or speak with your doctor first if you are pregnant, have had recent abdominal surgery, or have an umbilical hernia.

Avoid treatment if the skin around your navel is broken, infected, or irritated. Seek medical care first if you have fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or severe abdominal pain. Let us know about any allergies to oils, herbs, or legumes before your session.

Most people find it comforting. The oil is warm, not hot, and the dough ring keeps it neatly in place so nothing runs down your sides.

Many clients describe a heavy, cosy warmth that spreads across the belly and helps them drift into rest. Tell your therapist if anything feels too warm.

Your practitioner chooses the oil to suit your constitution and how you want to feel. Sesame oil is a traditional choice for Vata, ghee suits Pitta, and coconut oil helps when your body runs hot. Castor oil is a classic option for dryness and sluggish bowels.

Your practitioner may also use herbal medicated oils for more targeted support. The ring is made from black gram (urad dal) flour and water.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing you do not mind getting a little oil on. You will undress to your comfort level for the Abhyanga massage, and your therapist uses towels to keep you covered and warm.

Some oil may stay on your skin, so darker clothes are wise for the trip home.

Arrive on a light stomach, ideally about two hours after your last meal. Drink water beforehand and avoid alcohol that day. After your session, give yourself time to rest and keep warm.

A single Nabhi Basti session can feel calming, but chronic digestive or abdominal concerns usually require a short series within a broader plan. Our Ayurvedic doctor decides how many sessions you need and how often, then reviews the plan based on your response.

You can reserve your Nabhi Basti in Sydney online through our Fresha page or by calling us at +61 410 315 465. We’re open from 10AM to 7PM, 7 days a week.

Add an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation if you would like a personalised plan. Your core carries so much of your daily stress, and a little warmth may be exactly what it needs.
