Kati Basti – Back

1 hr, 30 mins
$395

Kati Basti treatment is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that pools warm herbal oil over your lower back.  Ayurvedic texts classify it as a form of Snigdha Sweda, pairing oil application (Snehana) with gentle heat (Swedana). If you have a stiff or aching back, a Kati Basti treatment in Sydney offers a calm, hands-on way to care for it.

Your Kati Basti treatment starts with a relaxing head massage and a nourishing Abhyanga full-body massage to prepare your body. Your therapist then gently places a soft dough ring over your lower back, creating a warm oil reservoir that holds herbal oil in place, allowing it to absorb deeply.

This deep absorption works to relieve your lower back pain and restore balance and flexibility in the area. Afterward, you’re invited to unwind in our meditation room with a complimentary herbal tea, so allow yourself a little extra time to relax and fully absorb the benefits of your treatment.

How Kati Basti can help you:
  • Kati Basti treatment is traditionally used to ease lower back pain, stiffness, and limited movement.
  • Ayurvedic doctors often recommend it for age-related wear in the lower spine and muscle spasms.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Ayurvedic doctor’s consultation before booking a Kati Basti treatment?

Not everyone needs one before booking Kati Basti. But schedule a consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor if you’re managing persistent or significant lower back pain, a diagnosed spinal condition, or you’re simply unsure whether Kati Basti suits you. That gives us the full picture of your health history, constitution and current imbalance before we recommend treatment.

If your pain is new, severe, or comes with leg numbness or weakness, see your GP first.

Kati Basti treatment is generally well tolerated when a trained therapist performs it under an Ayurvedic doctor’s guidance.

The main risk is a burn from oil that is too hot, so your therapist tests the oil and checks in with you throughout. Let your Ayurvedic doctor know if you reduced feeling in your back, have broken skin, are pregnant or have a recent injury, since warm oil may not suit you now.

Wait at least 72 hours after a fresh strain or sprain before booking. Standard Australian first aid advice, called “avoid HARM”, recommends avoiding heat and massage in the first 48 to 72 hours because both can increase swelling.

Once early swelling settles, Kati Basti treatment may suit you, but check with your GP or physiotherapist first. After a fall, fracture, or back surgery, get medical clearance and bring your scan reports to your consultation.

No, Kati Basti treatment works best alongside physiotherapy, not as a substitute. Your physiotherapist assesses your spine’s movement and gives you exercises to build strength, which warm oil therapy cannot do.

The two can fit together well, since the warmth may help you feel looser before your exercises.

Wear loose, comfortable dark clothing, since some oil may linger on your skin. Eat a light meal one to two hours before your session and use the bathroom before you lie down.

Bring these items to help your Ayurvedic doctor:

  • A list of your current medications and supplements.
  • Any recent X-ray or MRI reports for your back.
  • A hair tie if you have long hair.

Your Ayurvedic doctor selects a Taila (medicated herbal oil) based on your symptoms and constitution. Common choices include:

  • Mahanarayana Taila: a rich herbal blend in sesame oil, traditionally used for joint and muscle discomfort.
  • Ksheerabala Taila: made by cooking Bala (Sida cordifolia) with cow’s milk and sesame oil.
  • Sahacharadi Taila: often chosen when stiffness and heaviness are your main concerns.
  • Dashamoola Taila: prepared from a classic group of ten roots.

Tell your therapist about any skin sensitivities or allergies before your session.

Rest and keep your lower back warm for the rest of the day. These habits help you care for yourself afterward:

  1. Wait at least 30 minutes, then shower with warm water rather than cold.
  2. Skip heavy lifting and intense exercise for the rest of the day.
  3. Avoid cold drafts and cold drinks.
  4. Choose a light, warm meal and sip warm water.

This differs from person to person. Some clients book Kati Basti now and then as an occasional treatment, while others benefit from a short course of sessions depending on their symptoms, constitution and current imbalance. Our Ayurvedic doctor can map out an approach that suits you.

You can book your Kati Basti treatment in Sydney by calling us at +61 410 315 465 or through our Fresha page. We’re open 7 days a week from 10AM to 7PM.

Unsure which basti therapy fits? The team can guide you, as Janu Basti uses the same warm oil method for knees.

Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment. This gives you time to settle in and tell your therapist how your back feels today.

Allow extra time on your first visit for a health form, so you can relax fully into your Kati Basti treatment.
