Kizhi / Potli – Herbal Pouch Massage

1 hr, 15 mins
$225

Kizhi massage (also called Potli massage or Pinda Sweda) is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment where warm cloth pouches packed with herbs are pressed and swept over your body.

Your 75-minute Kizhi massage at Ayurvedic Wellness Centre begins with gentle work on your head, neck and shoulders. This is followed by a full-body Abhyanga massage using traditional Ayurvedic oils. Your therapist then heats muslin herb pouches in oil and massages them across your body with a steady rhythm. Tight or tender areas receive extra attention.

How Kizhi / Potli massage can help you:
  • Our clients often book Kizhi massage for muscle aches, long-standing stiffness, joint discomfort and soreness from exercise.
  • It may help reduce pain, stress and muscle tension.
  • Think of potli massage as supportive care, not a cure for the cause of your symptoms.

Great experience and service. The doctor recommended a fusion of two treatments in one session (head and shoulder massage + oiled pouch ) which I had completed. It was extremely relaxing, grounding and unwinding. Highly recommended.

The hot pouch experience was one of the most relaxing and invigorating experiences I have ever had.

Suffering from mild inflammation and chronic pain all my life I have had to use medications, vitamins, herbs, different massages and all the latest trends regarding pain relief. None of which have ever helped.

After the hour long session of hot oil and hot herbal pouch I can say that my pain 100% disappeared. Never have I felt so relaxed in my life.

Anyone wondering if you should do this trust me and do it! I have booked in every month for the year because I deserve to feel this good

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the herbs inside the Kizhi pouch?

Each pouch at Ayurvedic Wellness Centre holds about 18 herbs, and the blend is tailored to you. Since the recipe varies by client, share any allergies before you start.

Traditional pouches take a few forms. Leaf pouches (Elakizhi) may hold Nirgundi, Eranda (castor plant) and Shigru (drumstick tree) leaves. Rice pouches, called Navarakizhi, use a medicinal rice cooked in milk and herbal decoction.

The pouches should feel comfortably warm, never painful. Heat is checked throughout and each pouch stays in motion, so warmth never stays in one spot. Tell your Ayurvedic practitioner if it feels too much, and they will adjust it.

Avoid Kizhi massage if you have a fever or acute illness. Also avoid it with fresh injuries, open wounds, skin infections or any condition where heat should be avoided.

If you are pregnant or managing a significant health condition, consult our Ayurvedic doctor first. If you have eczema or psoriasis, let your therapist know so they can lower the heat, avoid flare-ups or patch-test the oil.

Kizhi massage suits post-workout soreness, ongoing tightness and later healing stages once an injury has settled. It is not suitable for new injuries, especially if swollen, bruised or warm to touch.

If you’ve just been hurt, check with your GP or physiotherapist. Then ask if potli massage could support your recovery.

You can choose either. Some of our clients prefer a full-body session with extra focus on trouble spots, while others want a targeted treatment. Point out where you feel discomfort so your therapist can plan accordingly.

Whether it’s your first or tenth potli massage in Sydney, wear relaxed clothes you don’t mind getting oily. Herbal oil rubs off on fabric, so save good outfits for another day.

You only undress as much as you feel comfortable with. Towels keep you covered, and your therapist uncovers just the area being treated.

Most likely yes, for a few hours. The oil carries an earthy herbal aroma that lingers on skin and hair. If that concerns you, schedule formal plans for another day.

Rest, drink water and save hard workouts for tomorrow if possible. At Ayurvedic Wellness Centre, you can relax with herbal tea in the meditation room before you leave.

Your therapist usually suggests leaving the oil on for one and a half to two hours, then rinsing off under a warm shower.

Many people feel looser and calmer by the end of a session, though responses vary. For long-standing stiffness, your Ayurvedic doctor can suggest how often to return. If pain keeps returning without a clear cause, combine potli massage with a medical check-up.

You can book a potli massage in Sydney through our Fresha page or by calling +61 410 315 465. Our clinic is at 1 Bondi Road, Bondi Junction NSW 2022, and has offered Ayurvedic care since 2011.
