People who suffer from asthma have airways that are permanently sensitised and often irritated or inflamed. This can cause contractions and swelling in the airway, making it harder to breathe and/or an increased production of mucus which also acts to block the airways and natural breathing pattern.

While Western medicine has devised a number of effective strategies to help manage the majority of symptoms, Ayurvedic medicine takes a slightly different approach, investigating the causal imbalances at the core of this chronic condition.

In Ayurvedic tradition, asthma and its associated breathing issues stem from an imbalance in the gut. This is due to improperly digested food being carried through channels directly into the chest and lung area, resulting in a build up of lung restricting toxins. A diet of highly processed foods, poor digestion and metabolic issues can all lead to the accumulation and eventual dispersal of undigested, toxic food that irritates airways and triggers an inflammatory response in the body.

Ayurvedic tradition also points to modern day epidemics like:

  • Stress
  • Chronic inflammation of different body systems
  • Impaired ability of the body to balance and heal itself
  • Instability in the nervous system as other causes of asthma
  • Over-active/Impaired immune system
