Fatty Liver Disease
Fatty liver disease is a chronic condition caused by accumulation of fat in the cells of the liver. This accumulation can be due to a number of factors, primarily alcohol (as in the case of alcohol-induced fatty liver) and poor lifestyle choices and/or undiagnosed medical conditions (as in the case of non-alcoholic fatty liver).
Fatty liver disease is on the rise due to our increasingly unhealthy lifestyle and heavy reliance on processed foods. Common causes of fatty liver include:
- Rapid weight loss
- Certain medications
Symptoms of fatty liver are often non-existent but can be detected by a doctor or through blood tests when a patient displays possible risk factors. Depending on the cause and type of fatty liver disease, a variety of treatments may be recommended.
In Ayurvedic tradition, the liver is considered an essential organ for detoxing and maintaining optimal health and well-being. When the liver becomes overloaded with toxins, the balance of the body will be disrupted and inflammation will spread. De-toxing the liver, minimising inflammation and restoring balance is at the core of Ayurvedic treatment.
