Diabetes

It’s estimated that approximately 1.7 million Australians suffer from either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, making it the fastest growing chronic condition in the country. This is attributed to the obesity epidemic currently sweeping the western world alongside the increasingly sedentary/high stress lifestyle led by many adults.

Diabetes is a serious and widespread condition. Ayurveda can help with the management of this illness.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system is activated and attacks the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. At this stage we do not know why this autoimmune reaction occurs. It is not linked to lifestyle factors and there is currently no cure.

Type 2 Diabetes is a progressive condition where the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin and/or gradually loses the capacity to produce enough insulin in the pancreas. While we do not know what causes this disease, it is associated with certain lifestyle risk factors and has a strong genetic link.

Managing diabetes can be a complex process involving changes to nutrition and lifestyle and in some cases, as with Type 1, medication.

While Ayurveda cannot ‘cure’ diabetes, it can help holistically manage the symptoms while helping the body to heal. Sufferers of Type 2 Diabetes in particular can benefit from an Ayurvedic approach that examines the role that accumulated toxins have to play in causing imbalance and insulin issues.

To effectively manage this condition, you will work closely alongside one of our Ayurvedic doctors to diagnose exactly what is happening within your body. A variety of tools is utilised to form a thorough diagnosis, which then informs treatment. The treatment protocol will focus on restoring the balance of the body and the normal, healthy functioning of the tissues along with:

  • Removing the build up of toxins within the body
  • Improving nutrition and digestive function
  • Lowering stress levels and supporting the nervous system
  • Strengthening the bodies ability to heal

This four-pronged approach works beyond the surface systems to completely overhaul your health and well-being at a deeper level and may involve:

  • Lifestyle modification
  • Counselling
  • Prescription of kitchen and medicinal herbal medicines
  • Instruction in gentle yoga postures and breathing exercises
